Dates of Visit: December 22, 2013 - January 3, 2014

The Ambassador had her first guest!  Fresh from graduate school and killing time before a cross country relocation, my honored guest hopped a flight and checked out the beauty of the GCC.

We started in Abu Dhabi.  After I grabbed her form the airport, we crashed at a friend's flat.

Our first adventure was to drive to Muscat, Oman.  It was the longest drive, ever!  Why?  I took the worst possible route.  I have no idea where those directions came from, very ill advised.  The upside is, I saw a lot of the Emirates I had never seen before and I drove through approximately one thousand roundabouts.  We lodged at the Intercontinental, a great hotel with excellent staff and a very affordable restaurant in walking distance.

Our first night, we went to a club.  We have video of a man crip walking on the dance floor!  When Snoop Dogg's song came on, he and his friends bum rushed the floor.  Woe unto all who blocked their path to the dance floor.  They were tearing it up, too!

On Christmas, we took a tour to a wadi.  We hiked up an incline to short to be a mountain and too high to be a hill.  It was really pretty.  Sadly, our guide's vehicle got stuck in the wadi and we were there for hours.  By hours, I mean over six.  Luckily, we are pretty mellow women and didn't get irritable.

That night, we went to a different club.  There were lots of people there.  It was packed.  We danced and had a few adult beverages.  For the record, the men in Oman are quite beautiful.  They are very friendly and a great many of them speak excellent English.  I feel like I made new friends!

We returned to the Emirates via Abu Dhabi.  We had a bit of an unfortunate wait in Immigration at the border crossing, but we had reading material, so it all worked out well.

The next day, we visited the Grand Mosque.  It is a place of great beauty and a testament to the talent of a great many artists, from the white marble and hand sewn carpet to the palm columns inlaid with semi precious stones and show stopping chandeliers.  The entry way before the main prayer hall makes you feel like you are in a garden.  It is a truly lovely place to visit.

That night we went to my favorite, Ray's Bar, which is located on the 62nd floor, Jumeirah at Etihad Towers.  The view of the corniche is outstanding!  The happy hour deals are very good and we shared a cigar.  We had a hard time finishing it and tried to blow smoke rings.  Our success was limited by our inexperience with cigars.

Our next adventure was in Dubai.  I took her to see Dubai Mall, where countless dirhams are spent each day.  We enjoyed the water show, complete with lights and music.

We had lunch at the Burj Khalifa, in the deli with a view of the water show. The deli was pricey, but the food was delicious.

On day two, we went on our desert safari.  Wouldn't you know it?  Our SUV got stuck in the sand!  We had terrible luck with tires this holiday!  LOL  We rode a camel and held a falcon.  I did not enjoy the camel ride.  I was certain I would fall off at any moment and as a short person, it was very difficult to climb aboard.  Nevertheless, nothing ventured, nothing gained!

There were other adventures, but I can't tell it all!  You just have to come join me somewhere in the wide, wide world and see what the fuss is all about.

Oak Cliff Ambassador, out!
